INSTRUCTORS

Sensei Fred L. Castillo - Sensei Castillo, owner and head instructor of Castillo's Shotokan Karate-Do, began training in the art of Karate in January 1967. He has trained in the Japanese karate systems of Chito-ryu, under the guidance of Sensei Calvin Avila; Shorin-ji-ryu, under Shihan Richard Kim of the Butoku-kai; and Shihan Kenneth Funakoshi of the F.S.F.A.. In addition to his 5th degree Black Belt in Shotokan Karate, Sensei Castillo has a B.A. in Health Services Administration from St. Mary's College in Moraga Ca. and is a registered Radiologic Technologist. Sensei Castillo also has a teaching credential in the profession of Radiologic Technology and occasionally has taught classes at Cabrillo Community College in Santa Cruz County.

Sempai Dan Aruiza-Sempai Dan has been training in the Shotokan System since 1991 and has been assisting for the past seven years under Sensei Fred Castillo. He recently received has third degree black belt in 2003. When not training or assisting in the Dojo, he can be found spending time with his wife and children. His professional career for the past fourteen years is being an Xray Technician at Watsonville Community Hospital. Other hobbies include surfing, woodworking and playing the drums. His philosophy to go by is, "Live life to the fullest!"

Sempai Jorge Vasquez-Sempai Jorge has known Sensei Castillo for approximately 20 years. He began his Karate training about 15 years ago when Sensei Castillo invited him to train in a class. Since that day, he never stopped training and earned his black belt in three years while training nearly 20 hours a week at that time. He has held the black rank for 12 years and is currently completed 3 of the five tests for his third degree black belt. Sempai Jorge has a fine talent at teaching children, and regularly teaches the Youth Class on Monday nights. He is a dedicated family man as he and his wife Rosa have two young children Valeria and Christen. He currently works at Watsonville Hospital and likes to run the stairs at the beach for extra training.

SEMPAI HERB DECKER-Sempai Decker, seen in the photo with his daughter and Sensei, has been training under Sensei Castillo since June of 2000. He studied Tae Kwon Do for 4 years and many years later, decided to study Shotokan Karate Do. He holds a degree in Music from San Jose State with a minor in Military Science, and a degree in Electronics from Cabrillo Community College. He served in the United State Army as a Lieutenant during the Vietnam War Era. He also is a nationally certified Fire Systems Designer and designs fire alarm systems for commericial buildings on his job with a large local fire alarm company. In addition to Karate, he devotes his time to his family and the conmmunity. He has been announcing baseball for Watsonville High School and Cabrillo College in past years, and he is currently helping the Women's Basketball team at Cabrillo College with their Web Site, photography, and official program.
